5 Tips for Parents to Prepare Young Kids for a Photo Shoot

As a Virginia lifestyle photographer (and a mom of three myself!), I know firsthand that preparing little ones for a photography session can feel overwhelming. The good news? It doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little preparation and the right mindset, your family photography session can be fun, relaxed, and full of real moments you’ll treasure. Here are my top 5 tips for parents with younger kids:

1. Keep It Casual

One of the best things you can do is not make a big deal about the photos. If your kids love the idea, then by all means share your excitement. But if not, keep it simple. Instead of saying, “We’re going to take pictures,” tell them you’re heading to the park, the town, or even to meet a friend who has a really cool camera. This takes the pressure off and helps kids relax.

2. Bring Snacks and Drinks

Little tummies get hungry quickly! Be sure to pack simple, mess-free snacks and a drink to keep everyone happy. A quick snack break can help younger kids reset and give us more time for those candid, joyful moments.

3. Plan a Fun Incentive

Kids love having something to look forward to. Think of a small reward after the session—like stopping for ice cream, watching a favorite show, or picking out a new book at the library. This helps kids stay motivated and makes the whole experience feel special.

4. Bring a Comfort Item

Does your child have a favorite toy or stuffed animal? Feel free to bring it along. If it’s something aesthetically pleasing, it can even become part of the photos! But most importantly, it gives your child a sense of comfort and familiarity, and can be a helpful distraction during the shoot.

5. Don’t Stress

This might be the most important tip of all. Please don’t stress about your kids “performing” for the camera. As a mom of three, I truly understand big feelings, tired moments, and unpredictable moods. I always schedule a consultation call before booking to plan sessions around your kids’ routines and energy levels. You know your children best, and together we’ll create an environment that feels natural, relaxed, and fun.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, my goal isn’t just to deliver beautiful images—it’s to make sure your family actually has a good time during the session. With the right preparation and a little flexibility, we can capture genuine smiles, sweet connections, and memories you’ll love for years to come.
