Why Golden Hour Is Perfect for Family Photography
in Virginia
If you have ever looked at warm, dreamy family photos and wondered why the light looks so soft and magical, there is a good chance they were taken during golden hour.
Golden hour is one of my favorite times of day for family photography, especially here in Virginia. The light is softer, warmer, and much more flattering than harsh midday sun. Instead of strong shadows, squinty eyes, and bright light coming from above, golden hour gives us that beautiful glow that makes photos feel full of warmth, connection, and life.
## What Is Golden Hour?
Golden hour is the time shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the sun sits lower in the sky. For family sessions, I usually recommend starting about two hours before sunset, depending on the location and time of year.
This gives us enough time to enjoy the soft evening light, capture a variety of portraits and candid moments, and still have that gorgeous golden glow as the sun gets lower.
## Why Golden Hour Makes Family Photos So Dreamy
One of the biggest reasons I love golden hour is the softness of the light. It creates a much more dreamy and natural look in your images. The light can shine beautifully through trees, wrap around your family, and add so much warmth and depth to the final gallery.
It also helps avoid harsh shadows on faces, which is especially important for family photos with little ones. Instead of fighting bright sun, we get to work with light that feels gentle, flattering, and full of emotion.
Golden hour also fits my personal editing style so well. My work is warm, saturated, colorful, and full of life, and golden hour gives me the perfect light to create that cozy, dreamy feeling I love so much.
## Golden Hour Is Especially Beautiful in Nature
Virginia has so many beautiful outdoor locations for family photos, and golden hour can make them look even more magical. When the sun shines through tall grass, trees, or open fields, it adds such a beautiful glow to your images.
That being said, the location really matters. Golden hour works best in places where the light can actually reach us. Open fields, lakes, wide paths, gardens, and locations with enough open sky are usually ideal.
A very closed-up forest, for example, may not be the best choice for golden hour because the sun is low and might not come through the trees enough to create that bright, glowing look. That is why I always consider the location carefully when helping choose the best session time.
## Golden Hour Can Be Better in the Summer
Summer sessions can be hot in Virginia, but golden hour helps so much. Since the sun is lower and the day is starting to cool down, the temperature often feels much more comfortable than an earlier afternoon session.
Of course, summer sunsets can be late, which means golden hour sessions may happen closer to bedtime for younger kids. I completely understand that this can feel a little intimidating for parents, but it can also be something really special.
Instead of treating it like a normal evening, I always suggest making it feel exciting for your kids. Tell them they get to stay up a little later for something fun. Maybe plan a small treat afterward, like ice cream, a special snack, or a cozy movie night at home. When kids feel like the session is a fun adventure instead of another thing they have to do, it can make such a difference.
## What If My Kids Are Tired?
This is one of the most common concerns parents have, and I promise you are not alone. Kids are kids, and every age is different. Some toddlers do better earlier, while older kids may love the excitement of an evening session.
The good news is that family photos do not need to be stiff or perfect. My approach is playful, relaxed, and focused on connection. We move, snuggle, laugh, play, explore, and let kids be themselves. Sometimes the sweetest photos happen when everyone stops trying so hard and just enjoys being together.
Golden hour adds to that feeling because the light itself creates such a calm, warm, and beautiful atmosphere.
## Is Golden Hour Always the Best Choice?
Golden hour is one of the best choices for dreamy outdoor family photography, but it does depend on your family, your children’s ages, the season, and the location.
For example, if we are shooting at a wide-open location with beautiful evening light, golden hour is usually perfect. If we are shooting somewhere heavily wooded or shaded, we may need to adjust the timing so we still have enough light.
That is why choosing the right time and location together is such an important part of planning your session.
## Final Thoughts
Golden hour is perfect for family photos because it gives us soft light, beautiful warmth, less harsh shadows, and that dreamy glow that makes images feel extra special.
For my warm and colorful editing style, golden hour light brings so much life into your gallery. It helps create photos that feel joyful, connected, natural, and full of love.
If you are planning a family photo session in Virginia and love warm, dreamy, golden images, golden hour might be the perfect time for your family.
